The Fearless Blogger Speaks to CNN About Phobias

When I said I’m ready to start sharing my story, I meant it!
And I don’t mess around – I went straight to CNN!
Something I haven’t really written about is my emetophobia. (Fear of vomit – either being around it and/or vomiting yourself. I “just” had a fear of being around it.)
My fear of being around anyone throwing up was so bad I couldn’t even watch cartoon scenes with it! (And after I heard Avatar 3D made some people sick, I made my boyfriend leave the theater & come back another day so I could sit in the middle of the last row, hopefully a “vomit safe zone”).
It’s one of those things that I knew in my head makes no sense. But, unlike dogs, snakes or even spiders, it’s natural to not want to be around vomit. Only for me, it was well beyond a natural reaction.
I recently recognized the extent to which I’d orchestrated my life around avoiding potential “exposures”. So I got help.
Now I am looking forward to seeing JackAss 3D (watching JackAss clips was part of my therapy!) and am ready to move to the next step which will somehow involve my therapist & I throwing up together (no joke!).
Even though I’m not completely done with the therapy, it’s already made a big difference in my life. I’m not avoiding as much and instead of panic when my “v-sensors” go off, I feel more of an excited curiosity, almost like going on a roller coaster or seeing a scary movie – I’m ready to (for lack of a better word) enjoy the anxiety.
Here’s the CNN article: Who’s afraid of snakes, spiders, vomit? – CNN.com.

Congratulations, Faryl!
Just so you know: “Hot Tub Time Machine” is a very entertaining movie, and includes at least one projectile vomiting scene (I haven’t watched it all the way through yet). So you might want to watch that if you’re looking for further exposure.
Just doing my part to help with your recovery. :)
You could do a blog post: Best Movie Vomit Scenes. #1 would be in “Stand By Me,” of course.
Awesome! Thanks, Mitch! :-) I did find a movie montage of 10 best vomit scenes – it would be fun to do an updated one.
The movies it included were Stand By Me (of course), The Sand Lot, Detroit Rock City, and Van Wilder (which wins for groshsest scene – not necessarily grossest vomit though!)
Of those, I’ve only seen “Stand By Me.”
