So, What’s a Twestival?

Today,  175+ cities around the world will be hosting Twestivals which bring together Twitter communities for an evening of fun and to raise money and awareness for charity: water.

For those who may not have any idea what a Twestival is, it can most succinctly be explained as:
Twitter + festival = Twestival

The Twestival is very similar to a Tweetup (yes, more “Tw-” words!) in the sense that people from Twitter connect offline to network and socialize face-to-face.

The Twestival is more than a mere Tweetup though:

  1. It is a much larger event in scope  (Tweetups are usually limited to one city) and involves teamwork by volunteers to coordinate
  2. Because of it’s widespread publicity, donor support, and the scale of the individual events (view L.A.’s Twestival line-up as an example), the Twestival has garnered participation by a wide range of people in Twitter communities, so although most are still early adopters, you will find a mix of diverse industries represented
  3. The most important reason : the Twestival supports a social cause by bringing awareness and raising funds collectively.

By rallying together globally, under short timescales, for a single aim on the same day, the Twestival hopes to bring awareness to this global crisis.

Tweet. Meet. Give.
As I’m writing this, there are already tweets from across the globe about Twestivals in earlier time zones.  Regardless if you use Twitter or not, there are still ways to get involved in today’s Twestival:

  1. Attending one of the events detailed on the city sites listed at Twestival.com.
  2. Uploading or buying music at Twestival.fm.
  3. Donating to charity: water.
  4. Tweet the facts from the charity:water website.
  5. Bidding on an item in the Twestival auction.
  6. Buying an official Twestival shirt.

The event is being live-streamed by Live Earth.  Visit the site for a world map of Twestival locations and to see live video and participant photos of the Twestivals around the world.
