Musings: Wealth and Happiness
Warren Buffet has lived in the same house in Omaha for the past 50 years. When this was mentioned in an interview, Buffet replied by sharing this quote:
Success is getting everything you want. Happiness is wanting everything you get.
Now there’s a man who is truly rich – in more ways than one.
What is your definition of success?
Of happiness?
True wealth?

I’ve got no pat answer for the definition of success or happiness, but in a lot of ways happiness is learning what I want and doing it. You might have guessed that learning what I want is the hardest part.

For me, happiness is a CHOICE. After a lifetime of suffering from depression, I woke up one day feeling happy for no good reason. I remember I was anticipating something fun later that day, and I woke up saying “today is going to be a good day.” The shock of realization that I was able to declare a good day into existence woke me up. From then on, although it’s not automatic and doesn’t mitigate my misfortunes, I have been aware of the immense power I have in determining how I feel about what’s going on around me. Success and Happiness are arbitrary terms, experienced inside each of us based upon our own definitions. Whether we choose to cling to definitions and standards created by others (and measure ourselves positively or negatively against them), or choose to define those terms ourselves, the bottom line is that WE CHOOSE.
I believe true happiness exists when you could strip away you think defines you and still feel blessed. It’s a state of mind that’s independent of having and striving. Most people who are unhappy believe it’s just a promotion, diet, or relationship away. What they don’t understand is that the only real choice is to be happy now or not; to open your eyes and say life is beautiful just as it is.

Happiness is a state of mind that really depends how we see the situations in our lives each day. you can have all the riches in the world but still see it as a lonely place.;’`
