Ego or Caring? Video by Gary Vaynerchuk

Ego searching, as defined by Wikipedia, is:

the practice of searching for one’s own given name, surname, full name, pseudonym, or screen name on a popular search engine, to see what results appear.

Other terms for ego searching are vanity searching, ego surfing, or simply “googling yourself” (which, despite old wives’ tales, will not make you go blind or grow hair on your palms!).

Why do it?  There are a number of reason.  Aside from the implied ego or vanity – curiosity and boredom may come to mind.  But it’s not all about boosting your self-esteem (or injuring it-depending on the results).  If you have a business, interact with clients, are concerned with your reputation, or care how you are perceived, so-called ego surfing provides a valuable window into what others are saying about you online.

In this video, Gary Vaynerchuk raises the question “Ego Searching or Caring?“. Following the killer cheesy 80′s music intro, Gary explains why searching for yourself (or your business, product, brand, etc.) is a way to accomplish the key to relationships: listening.

As Gary explains, actively seeking out what people are saying about you is imperative to building your business. He also offers some strategies and resources to use for your searches such as the Google blog search and Twitter’s search feature.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment. What strategies do you use to listen?
