What Do You Value? | a post from ReinventingErica.com
I just read a post at ReinventingErica.com where Erica O’Grady helps her readers explore the question: What do you value?
Erica discusses the need to be understood as a common motivation factor for most people and the close bonds a mutual understanding can create.
As a basis of understanding someone, we need to identify their core values. Erica describes “core values” as
the things that are most important to you in life – and they influence the way you act, the choices you make, and the way you spend your time.
It’s hard to expect someone to understand you, if you don’t understand yourself. Erica suggests answering these three questions as a starting point:
- What motivates you?
- What are you Passionate about?
- Who are you and what do you stand for?
Speaking for myself, unless given previous thought, these are not necessarily questions that can be answered quickly and easily. Certainly these answers are important insights not only for personal connections and goals, but for a fulfilling, gratifying, and successful professional life as well.
I’m planning to set some time aside over the next couple of weeks to answer these questions for myself. As Erica does on her post, I’ll share my core values here when I do.
What about you?
What are your core values?
Are they something you feel comfortable sharing online?
If not, what makes you hesitate?
You can read Erica’s post for the full background and resources on how to identify core values here:

for me having a good definition of who i am is one of my core values, it is especially helpful in situations where it’s easy to point fingers or abandon the situation entirely. staying true to myself when under pressure best shows my family and friends that i’ll be there for them in a bad situation no matter how thick it gets and that i’ll take accountability for my actions when i mess up…which seems to be quite often lately =P
@cannibal – Being able to define yourself and stay true to that are admirable accomplishments in my mind – I don’t think as many of us do that as maybe we should. (also – sounds like loyalty is one of your core values – do you agree?) :-)
