35,000 Tweet – er FEET – in the sky

Saw this tweet come through from Virgin America today.

I love this for three reasons:

  1. Virgin America is on Twitter.
  2. Virgin America uses Twitter to connect with its customers (or bloggers who wish they could afford to be customers!)
  3. Virgin America has wifi!

Provided via Gogo Inflight Internet, the new service costs from $10-13, depending on the length of the flight. Personally, I kind of like the idea of the fee – it offers an excuse not to plug in if you value your fly time as “down time” (as I did, back in my road warrior consulting days) without the cost being too prohibitive to choose to connect.

Birds may have been tweeting from the sky long before Virgin America and they are not the first to provide wifi in the sky. But the airline did break completely new ground today by also having

the first-ever live, air-to-ground video-stream: broadcasting to thousands of people at YouTube Live in San Francisco – and millions of viewers online.

Apparently, Virgin Air is also the official travel sponsor of YouTube Live, which they’re promoting by “allowing YouTube celebs to shoot self-directed videos, including this video by “Chocolate Rain” singer Tay Zonday.”

What are your thoughts on wifi on planes?

On YouTube Live?
